The
“Celtic-Norse Connection” or How Our Business “Lords
of the Seas” Originated
In
my childhood, I was influenced by both Irish and
Swedish cultures.
My maternal side of the family was Irish and
my paternal side was Swedish.
I have visited both Ireland and Sweden
several times and have felt quite at home in each of
the respective countries.
For a significant part of my life, I kept the
cultures separate, thinking they were two distinct
entities.
On
one of my trips to Ireland, I visited Waterford.
At the Viking
Museum in Waterford, there was a moment of
revelation for me.
I realized the Vikings and the Norse people
that initially invaded and terrified Irish
populations, eventually assimilated into Irish
regions, bringing new knowledge and customs, which
became part of the Irish culture.
While visiting Iceland, I learned of Irish
monks who left Ireland to settle into colonies on
Iceland, before the Vikings settled in Iceland.
It was apparent both cultures were born of
the seas and comfortable with the sailing of the
seas. Hence,
they were the Lords
of the Seas.
I
began to realize that my heritage was a blend of
sea-faring adventurers with maritime savvy.
The Lords of the Seas were the Celtic-Norse
Connection. I
am continuing my research and studies regarding this
concept. In
the meantime, throughout many festivals, I have
encountered numerous Celts with Viking ancestry and
Vikings with Celtic relatives.
It
is my hope to represent both cultures (Celtic and
Norse) and to promote the knowledge of how the
confluence of Irish and Norse cultures mutually benefited
each culture. Our
business,
Lords of the Seas, offers gift items that
acknowledge both cultures through art, unique gift
items, jewelry and books.
We have gifts for all occasions and unusual
cards and labels for the Christmas season.
We hope you enjoy our site and continue to
celebrate your Celtic and/or Viking heritage.
