A Brief Historical Background of the Celts

The Celts were "Lords of the Seas" and excellent navigators of the seas. The Celts learned the currents of the oceans and navigated the seas to find new countries and make new settlements. The boats of the Celts were Currraghs that were wooden-framed, hide covered boats that bobbed lightly on the ocean waves.

Early Christian poets and historians of pagan Ireland write of the early centuries of Christianity.  For the first five hundred  years  of Christianity, the Irish were isolated and conservative and on the edge of Europe.  They were not as connected to the matters of Europe and were excluded from the progress of Europe, and yet, were excluded from the negative influences of Europe (i.e. The Dark Ages).

The navigation of the seas were primarily for resettlement or to spread the word of Christianity.  Some  Irish religious  followed the Lord's command to Abraham "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land  that I will show you."  Some examples of these clerics are St. Patrick and St. Brendan the Navigator.

A Brief History of Vikings in Ireland

The Vikings were "Lords of the Seas" in a different manner.  The Vikings had a passion for voyaging on the seas.  When they invaded other lands, their key strategy was to strike with surprise.  Monasteries were plundered and domestic animals were taken back to the Viking ships.  The Vikings started their raids in the late 790's.  By the end of the 10th century, the Celtic civilization and the Scandinavian Vikings had merged.  Vikings began to abandon their pagan ways and became attracted to Christianity.

The "Lords of the Seas" business seeks to recognize the heritage of the Celts and the Vikings by creating works of art that embrace the culture and the knowledge of both civilizations.  Please visit our virtual gift shop and become steeped in the wisdom sayings, the art and the products that we offer.
